How your incredible Brain Works!

Let’s take a moment to take a very general overview of how the brain works.

Different parts of the brain work to perform different functions. The most primitive part, is the brain stem, which links with the spinal chord and governs basic life support. The cerebellum controls balance and movement and the limbic system governs, amongst other things, heart rate and temperature. The cerebral cortex, extends over the entire brain and is the most recent in evolutionary terms. This is the part which marks us as human, allowing us to daydream, communicate and create.

The brain is made up of millions upon millions, of nerve cells or neurons. Each is tremendously powerful and carries your unique genetic code.

Each cell has a centre, from which numerous spidery branches called dendrites extend and also a long tail or axon. The contact point, (in reality a little gap) between each neuron is the synapse. When a brain cell fires a signal, it travels at lightning speed along the axon, across the synapse to the neighbouring dendrite of another cell. This in turn passes the signal in the same way to other cells, making myriad connections and creating thought pathways.

All the patterns of our life experiences lie within this complex system of connections. All our memories and perceptions. Each and every thought, increases the complexity and changes the actual physical nature of the network, making us truly individual and unique. By concentrating on a certain kind of activity, we increase those thought routes and become more adept at that skill. This is because the more often a signal passes along a thought pathway the more easily and swiftly it travels, as there is less resistance to it. Continuous use of the same 'thought track' becomes a habit, as routine fires the same cells in the same sequence.

Because of this certain parts of the neural network become more dominant than others with continual use. For instance it has been found that there are more dendrite connections on the neurons in the language areas of highly educated people. The more a particular area of the mind is used the more it grows and extends. Learning creates and extends the neural network, opening up new and varied pathways and connections. It is therefore important to feed the brain the right things!
