Mind Body Connection.

What does mind body connection mean?

Mind body connection is the term used to express how your mind and body work together and how emotions can affect your health. The two are intrinsically linked. The body and mind may well be separate words, but they work together and impact on each other in numerous ways, some more beneficially than others.

We are all subject to a range of feelings throughout our lives. Some are more pleasant than others. These feelings affect our physical well being and can at times make us ill. A negative mental attitude has been shown to lower our immune system, which in turn leaves us more open to infection. To have a healthy body, we need to develop ways to keep a positive and emotionally balanced mind. We are not always going to feel happy. What we want is to have the emotional freedom to either accept and handle, or to change our thoughts for better feelings. We need to develop control and awareness as to our thoughts and feelings and how they affect our physical health. Sometimes the awareness and acceptance of a mood is enough to take the power out of it, and keep a degree of mind body harmony.

How do you change your state of mind should you wish to?

Changing the state of your mind is not nearly as hard as you might think it is. There are many ways to do so. By changing your state of mind you can feel better physically.Try these if you’re feeling a wee bit sorry for yourself. They work!

Think happy.

Think happy. Smile (even to yourself!) Hum or sing a happy tune! Think of a funny joke! Count your blessings. Jump up and down. Play. Breathe…yes breathe!

Think positive.

Whenever you can try to put a positive spin on any situation that arises. Can you find something worthwhile out of even the darkest moments. Whatever the situation find some benefit in it.

Visualise.

Shut your eyes for a moment and visualise a happy time. Really experience all the colour, sounds and emotions of that moment when you felt really good. Enjoy and savour those feelings of well being. Now open your eyes and keep those thoughts and feelings at the front of your mind.

Move.

Any kind of exercise greatly enhances mood and a happy mind state. An activity which gets your heart pumping will increase adrenalin and the production of the feel good ‘endorphins.’ These create a natural high which can last for hours. The production of endorphins can also have the advantage of helping to fight pain. In addition exercise gives you confidence, a major factor in being able to think positively. Yoga is an excellent exercise method to combine the body and the mind.

Eat well.

We are what we eat! Food can greatly alter your mood and thinking. Our bodies are made up of 90% water so drinking plenty through the day will bring immediate benefits. Plenty of fruit and vegetables, protein and pulses and regular meals all play their part in keeping the mind and body healthy. Avoiding certain foods like sugar and caffine which cause fluctuations in sugar levels will help to maintain a healthy balance.
