Personal Goal Setting For Success!

Most of us are familiar with personal goal setting. We do it every New Year right? There they are. All our best intentions set out at the top of the shiny new diary.

Have you, ever noticed a recurring theme?

Each year the resolutions are remarkably the same! Year after year we are setting the same goals!

Why?

I keep my old diaries. So I checked through to find out what was going on. What I noticed was a distinct enthusiasm for the tasks for about six weeks and then suddenly (about mid- February) all of the aims and goals disappeared from the diary without trace!

It seemed to me that although New Year is the traditional time of year for these lofty aspirations, perhaps it’s not the best time?

I decided to move my main goal making time to the Spring. Somehow things seem more optimistic at that time. Days are getting warmer and longer and everything is bursting into life. If any kind of weight loss is a recurring unfulfilled goal, then the prospect of the up coming summer holiday is a good motivation! It’s also imminent enough to keep you on track. In mid-February a holiday can seem a long way a way!

I then looked at my diaries to work out whether my expectation of what I wanted to achieve was realistic. For the most part it was not. Usually the goal was way too general and unspecific. Something like “lose weight and become fitter this year!” I also noticed there were some goals that I felt I ought to be listing for various reasons, but which I clearly had no intention of achieving because they didn’t matter much to me.

The main catalyst for successful personal goal setting is a rock solid, mental attitude towards the task in hand. It’s necessary to structure your goal setting and have clear and defined plans, but the mental determination is the most powerful ingredient for success. Without it, despite valiant efforts, you are unlikely to achieve. You have got to really want the thing badly and then wholeheartedly work towards it with no thought of failure.

With the right kind of mind power you are already on your way!
